Dr. Morris Brown, born in 1948 in Anniston, Alabama, has led a distinguished career as a physician and a community advocate. The son of a laborer and Baptist preacher, a father and a mother who progressed from sharecropping to a nurse’s aide, Dr. Brown’s upbringing was steeped in values of hard work, resilience, and service. These foundational values, combined with the turbulent racial dynamics of his childhood in the civil rights era, shaped his commitment to advocacy and healthcare.
Throughout his youth, Dr. Brown was confronted with the harsh realities of racial injustice, which fueled his determination to effect change. This resolve was further solidified by his early employment experiences, where he was among the first African Americans to work in service roles in his community, breaking down racial barriers and setting a precedent for future generations.
Dr. Brown excelled academically, demonstrating his leadership abilities early on by graduating third in his class from Cobb Avenue High School in Anniston, where he also served as class president. He then pursued higher education at Knoxville College in Tennessee, earning a Bachelor of Science in Biology. At Knoxville, he was deeply involved in student leadership through the Omega Psi Phi fraternity and various student government positions, further honing his skills in leadership and advocacy.
His pursuit of a medical career led him to Meharry Medical School in Nashville, Tennessee, one of the historically black colleges and universities renowned for training African American medical professionals. After graduating in 1974, Dr. Brown joined the United States Air Force Medical Corps, serving as the Director of Aerospace Medicine. This role allowed him to provide vital healthcare services across various military bases, enhancing his medical and leadership skills.
Following his military service, Dr. Morris Brown, Dayton, played a pivotal role in the recovery efforts at Central State University after it suffered significant damage from a tornado. His efforts were instrumental in securing the funding needed to rebuild the community health center, proving his adeptness in leadership and project management.
Dr. Brown settled in Dayton, Ohio, and completed his residency at Wright State Medical School/Miami Valley Hospital. Over the ensuing 35 years, he devoted himself to serving marginalized communities, growing his practice to over 10,000 patients and focusing on addressing healthcare disparities.
Since retiring in 2018, Dr. Morris Brown, Ohio, continues to impact his community through his work with the nonprofit “Above the Law,” which focuses on criminal justice reform and providing non-incarceration alternatives for nonviolent youth. Additionally, he serves as a Certified Medical Legal Consultant and Chief Financial Officer for Central Solutions LLC, where he applies his expertise to enhance business strategies within the commercial maintenance sector.
His numerous awards and recognitions reflect Dr. Brown’s enduring dedication to medicine and social justice. Beyond his professional life, he enjoys chess, jazz, theater, and the arts, maintaining a vibrant connection with his community through these cultural pursuits.
